Today is the day to honor all things Obama. The New York Times
reported last week that Barack Obama has is sweet on salted caramels
, giving us a serious craving to try them.
His brand of choice is Fran's
, a Seattle-based chocolatier, which you can order online. Choose from milk and dark chocolate wrapped caramels with gourmet salt on top.
There's no need to pay shipping for this up and coming flavor combination.
1. Assorted Chocolate Caramels with Sea Salt
(pictured) by V Chocolates
Soft, chewy, billowing pillows of caramel, covered with dark or milk chocolate and sprinkled with sea salt. The dark chocolate-covered caramels are pretty much perfection in a bite. They look too pretty to eat, but you'll get over that.
$10.95 for a box of 8 and $24.95 for a box of 32, available at Max's
, 3831 Grand Way, The Shops at Excelsior & Grand, Saint Louis Park, 952-922-8364
2. Honey Fleur de Sel Caramels
by Obsession Chocolates
These sticky little pockets are minimalist in design and pack a salty sweet punch. At the same shop, there's another gooey delicacy. If you prefer your salted caramel without the chocolate shell, try the salted caramels, locally produced by Bramblewood Cottage. They're out of stock at the moment, but they'll be back soon.
$2.25 per piece (for the Obsession Chocolates), available at Golden Fig Fine Foods, 790 Grand Av., St Paul, 651-602-0144.
3. Izzy's Salted Caramel Ice Cream
Salty, sweet and creamy. This popular (and our personal favorite) ice cream flavor isn't always available, but you can call the cafe, leave your name and they will notify you when it's on the menu. When they call with the good news, you can reserve your pint or quart or head on over for a scoop. You'll never eat dulce de leche again.
$6 per pint (but there's currently a pint sale for $4), Izzy's Ice Cream Cafe
, 2034 Marshall Av., St. Paul, 651-603-1458.
