It's unofficial Italian week on Pop Fizz. Okay, there will just be two days of European appreciation, but here's the second round:

As anyone who has visited Rome knows, gelato is the ultimate frozen treat, erupting with intense flavors and possessing a texture than makes ice cream seem like ice milk. And, in a trick of ingenuity worthy of da Vinci, gelato contains less butterfat: Making it ounce for ounce less fattening.

The only downside is that buying tickets to Italy to satisfy every craving can get expensive. Now, you needn't go further than Lunds or Byerly's. The new private label gelato is made in Italy and then somehow magically lands in your grocery store's freezer section. It clearly travels well -- the concoction stays soft in your freezer, instead of hardening like ice cream.

Our favorite flavors so far are pictured: cherries & cream, caramel cream (with toasted almonds), and Bacio hazelnut. True to form: Each serving has around 140 calories and 6 grams of fat. That's frozen yogurt territory! So gelati-ti-da all you want.

Lunds and Byerly's Gelato, $5.99 (currently on sale for $4), available exclusively at Lunds and Byerly's locations.
