Here in Winterland, it can be tough to get your fix of good down home Southern cooking, but Brasa not only pulls off Southern food well -- it does it with flair, adding in some Caribbean zest.

This unassuming garage-style (literally, the glass-paneled garage doors are still intact) restaurant packs big flavor with classics like creamy cheese grits and honey butter-doused corn bread. We recommend mixing it up though with the slow roasted, lime-infused pulled pork that's so succulent it melts on your tongue and an a la carte side like fried sweet plantains or roasted yams with andouille sausage. Pair it with a popsicle-flavored cane sugar sweetened soda ($2) in lime or guava - they taste like summer.

Word to the wise: Eat in during an off-time because this place is seat-yourself, first-come-first-serve only and gets crowded fast. Or order take-out and enjoy the goodness at home.

Also, four parties of more than four can go family-style and try a little bit of everything. With Southern flavors this genuine, the more the merrier.

Pork (quarter pound $5, half pound $9, whole pound $16.50), Sides (small $3.50-$4.75, large $7.00-$9.50), available at Brasa Rotisserie, 600 E Hennepin Av., Mpls., 612-379-3030.
