Convertible car season may be coming to a close, but peak season for convertible clothing has just begun. Enter M. Kalan clothing at Shorty's Loft.

This electric blue jersey dress can stay cool with flip-flops and a chunky necklace for now but will keep you warm with some espresso riding boots and a silky scarf come September. Plus it's comfier than PJ's (and more than acceptable to wear in public). Summer-to-fall closet conversion complete.

The store has quite a conversion story itself. The original Shorty's Loft was a Long Lake gift store with Native American flair started by Louise Otten. She and current co-owner Nancy Sherman ran (or rather rode) in the same horse show circuit. When Nancy put away her riding boots, she picked up Shorty's Loft (figuratively speaking) and took it on the road as a mobile store operating out the back of a used trailer. Eventually, Nancy's wares evolved from Native art to modern fashion.

Three years ago, Nancy converted the boutique on wheels into a stationary one once more. Shorty's horse show roots haven't been forgotten, though: The new spot on Excelsior & Grand keeps the country feel kicking with a barn-red ceiling and faded wood-slat walls.

Shorty's Loft and its downtown derby style? Consider us converted.

M. Kalan dress, $90, at Shorty's Loft, 4590 Excelsior Blvd., St. Louis Park, 952-473-0404.
