Issue 257

Instead of turkey and pumpkin pie, we're starting the week with counter-programming.
Some of our favorite guacamoles:
Cafe 28 (2724 W 43rd St, Mpls, 612-926-2800)
Tasty on its own ($9), but even better with salsa roja and salsa verde, queso fresco and sour cream accompaniments and freshly fried La Perla corn tortillas. Enjoy with a glass of Viognier ($8).
Barrio (235 E 6th St, St Paul, 651-222-3250 and 925 Nicollet Mall, Mpls, 612-333-9953)
This guac and chips ($7.50) is our favorite tableside preparation. We suggesting ordering one per person. Try it with The Trinity (if you like the classics) or Enter the Dragon (for the adventurous).
Masa (1070 Nicollet Mall, Mpls, 612-338-6272)
This fresh guac ($9) feels like health food, thanks to the serving of crudite that's served with it. Great with a sparkling glass of Sangria Espumosa.
Tejas (3910 W 50th St, Mpls, 952-926-0800)
The bad news: This favorite spot is closing on Dec. 30. So hurry up to get this delicious tableside guac. During happy hour (Mon. through Fri., 4 to 6 p.m.), it's only $3.95. Eat it with the margarita of the day ($8). The good news: You can get basically the same stuff at
Bar Abilene (1300 Lagoon Av, Mpls, 612-825-2525)
for $9.95.
