Running all over town to get ready for a party or special event makes you want to tear your hair out.

Simplify the madness at Smart and Chic Beauty Lounge, Julie Swenson's new salon/retail space/makeup mecca, which has its grand opening Wednesday.

Swenson had the idea after working with brides. Tired of dragging around suitcases, she wanted to have a headquarters, where anyone could find makeup and styling products with pro-advice.

Well, this place is beauty central. The by-appointment services include styling and makeup. On weekends, the retail space has open hours and offers clutches from Nelle handbags and hair pieces by Betthany Lorelle. Let Swenson and her team direct you to the perfect products, including Jouer cosmetics, Blow blow dry products and Malin + Goetz skin care. Smart and Chic's signature line of products includes evertyhing from brushes to plumping lip gloss for $10 to $30. Need a touch-up? They'll put together a kit for you.

On Wednesdays through Fridays, make a happy hour appointment (5 to 8 p.m.) for a blowout (regularly $35), manicure (regularly $25) or makeup application (regularly $35) and get $5 off each service plus a sparkling beverage. In March, look for a group makeup lesson, where you can bring in your bag and the team will teach you how to use it.

You'll learn how to look your best once and for all. So don't split hairs.

Smart and Chic Beauty Lounge, 20 University Av NE, Mpls. Open for retail from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Services available every day, by appointment only at 612-871-4482 or online. Grand Opening party: 7 to 11 p.m. on Wednesday. There will be a 1940s costume, so feel free to wear a costume.
