Todays pic If breakfast is the most important meal of the day, why not eat it for dessert as well. Try one of these a.m.-inspired sweets.

Pain Perdu
We're so happy to have found this "lost bread" as the French call their famous toast. Our favorite is Chocolate Pain Perdu with caramelized bananas and cinnamon ice cream at Lurcat (pictured, 1624 Harmon Pl, Mpls, 612-486-5500). Also delicious: 20.21 at the Walker Art Center has a version with Marcona almonds and sherry-tinged ice cream. More? Try the Brioche Pain Perdu with nutella and blackberry sorbet. We'll toast to that!

Sure, the waffle cone has been widely accepted in the sweet treat category, check out the Belgian Waffle at Aster Cafe. The generous portion is served with salted caramel ice cream, toasted walnuts and whipped cream.

Looking for the cream of the crepe? Try the Crepes de Cajeta at Masa (1070 Nicollet Mall, Mpls, 612-338-6272). It's covered in tangy goat's milk caramel and crunchy candied pecans.

Who needs donuts, when you can have delicious Sweet Potato Beignets at Heidi's. They've survived the relocation and are now served with bourbon rice pudding. We wonder how a to-go order of the fried, sweet, gooey dough, would taste the next morning.

It's the best part of waking up and worth a caffeine buzz at any hour: The Midnight Express at Zelo (831 Nicollet Mall, Mpls, 612-333-7000) is perfectly sweet, a little creamy and topped with a few espresso beans. Isn't it time for your wake-up call?
