Hallelujah for Huckleberries

Delicious fruit is rather scarce this time of year. Except for citrus, we're a little bored with the current lackluster crop. However, there's a trendy fruit-of-the-moment popping up on local menus.

Crossbreed the perfect little blueberry and a sweet fantasy sugarplum and -- voila! -- you have a huckleberry. We tried this juicy little fruit in Montana, but apparently it's rare everywhere else and we've been on a wild goose chase for these treasures ever since. So far, we've found them with fish and foie gras at the Red Stag Supper Club and in the North Point cocktail at Restaurant Max.

Our favorite Twin Cities take on the tangy berries is Good Day Cafe's huckleberry crepes. The light and spongy crepe offsets the sweet mounds of berries inside and the warm syrup and powdered sugar drizzled over top. If you're feeling extra naughty, pile on some fresh whipped cream for a breakfast so scrumptious you'll swear you're eating dessert

Well, you kind of are. But sometimes, that's a berry good thing.

Huckleberry crepes, $7.50, from Good Day Cafe, 5410 Wayzata Blvd. (near Highway 100 and 394), Golden Valley, 763-544-0205.
